For the last 20+ years I’ve been celebrating IWD in the corporate world … a world where we’ve used the day to celebrate the progress and achievements being made. And that’s been important because, let’s face it, there are still today material discrepancies in the number of women in senior and leadership roles, and in gender pay. Corporates now recognise the issue and, in most cases, are working hard to address the imbalances. However, targets of 40% of women on Boards and an 8% gender pay gap shows there is still a long way to go, and it’s a nut that hasn’t been cracked.

I’ve personally experienced this from how many meetings I’ve attended where I’ve been the only woman, and sadly I’ve heard too often ‘when your kids are older you’ll be able to ….’. For me, I’ve enjoyed the challenge of pushing against these barriers and breaking new ground. However, it is no wonder that so many women walk away from that world.
So when I started working at PGB earlier this year, it was so enthralling to find an absolute gold mine of talented women. From our team at PGB (our incredible CEO Hattie Ghaui, our cause-driven Project Lead Isabella Nunes da Costa, and our fountains of knowledge Trustees – Rosie Atkins and Alex Denman), to the PR, social media, production, design, RHS, garden design and charity teams we work with. Our IWD reel this year celebrates the real breadth of talent we work with every day. I haven’t once been in a meeting where men have outnumbered women. And what’s more, these aren’t women doing ‘token’ roles either – they are professional, dedicated and talented at what they do. It’s inspiring and it’s so refreshing.
I was chatting to Alex Denman, one of our Trustees, about the contrast of my experiences and importantly she reminded me of how lucky we are to have great men in our team who support us every day as well, in particular her fellow Trustees Mark Fane and Arne Maynard. She shared with me how she had assumed Mark was pocket-calling her when he got in contact about becoming a Trustee at PGB. Following a very successful career at the RHS, Alex had taken some time out for her family, and for Mark to remember her and make that contact was a huge confidence boost.
Similarly, this support and investment has been extended into the PGB team, from both the Trustees and Founders. It has been such a delight to learn how Hattie and Isabella, (both relatively young as a CEO at 32 and Project Lead at 26), have felt empowered, entrusted and supported to build and run such a huge project and budget. It is clear to me how much they thrive in an environment where they are trusted with the flexibility to work in the way they need to, and they make inspiring role models as a result.
My conclusion is therefore: achieving balance won’t come from just focusing on targets, but instead by creating your own version of ‘Project Giving Back’.
