This garden celebrates the life of people with Down’s syndrome through its reflection on their unique qualities including compassion and empathy, as well as their positivity and determination. Visitors enter the immersive, semi-wooded garden on a ‘crazy paving’ path and meander through two main areas of planting, each conveying contrasting moods.
The garden path ends at a feature building and decorative tiles are scattered into the paving at the entrance. This inviting structure sits among tall river birch trees with delicate hanging branches and is designed to look and feel like a comforting ‘hug’, a quality often displayed by people with Down’s syndrome.
Nick Burton and Duncan Hall were inspired to co-design this garden by Duncan’s nephew, Liam, who has Down’s syndrome and has been supported by Down’s Syndrome Scotland. The garden will help challenge the misconceptions and barriers faced by people in Liam’s community and encourage society to change their perceptions so people with Down’s syndrome can fulfil their life potential.
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

Down’s Syndrome Scotland is a small committed charity, established in 1982 to support people with Down’s syndrome, their families and their carers. It also supports professionals who work with people with Down’s syndrome in health, social care and education. Its mission is to help everyone it works with to reach their fullest potential, to celebrate that potential, and to influence public policy. It is the only charity in Scotland dedicated solely to supporting people with Down’s syndrome and their families and carers.
It will be relocated to the garden managed by charity Watch Us Grow in partnership with Down’s Syndrome Scotland, at Palacerigg Country Park, Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire.
